Your Complete Guide to Engagement Photos at Boston Public Library

July 9, 2025

Your romantic photoshoot at the Boston Public Library in the heart of Copley Square awaits! From the grand marble staircase to the iconic reading room with greens lights, you have the entire library to yourself for a whole hour before it’s open to the general public. Read this guide to prepare for your photoshoot.

Scheduling Your Session

  1. Must be scheduled on weekdays before the library is open to the public (8:00 am – 9:00 am)
  2. Photography permit costs $750
  3. Contact the Special Events Office one month prior to your desired photoshoot date. Additional information: flyer; email: events@bpl.org; phone number: 617-859-2212
  4. Once you arrive, get the attention of the staff through the front door and mention to them you have a photography permit

Please be mindful during your photoshoot — No climbing on furniture or historic fixtures. Staff will be keeping a watchful eye through your whole photoshoot so please be respectful of the property!

Important: A photography permit is required for all professional photoshoots. There is security and staff around every perimeter during business hours. If they spot a professional camera that looks like a photoshoot, avoid the risk of getting kicked out!

There are 3 main locations at the Boston Public Library! Set a 15 minute timer to not lose track of time. It goes by quick, I promise you!

1. Bates Hall

2. The Courtyard

3. The Grand Staircase

4. Outdoor Staircase

Save this location until the very end! Photos outside of the Boston Public Library are open to the public.
